Bangladesh is a riverine country. About 700 rivers including tributaries flow through the country constituting a waterway of total length around . Most of the country's land is formed through silt brought by the rivers. Where it flows out of India, the Ganges' main channel becomes the Padma River. Similarly, below its confluence with the Teesta River, the main channel of the Brahmaputra River is known as the Jamuna River.
